What is Photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food using energy from sunlight. Without photosynthesis, all organisms on Earth would eventually die. Food webs would collapse, and many species would go extinct.

How It works To survive plants need sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Chloroplasts are tiny parts inside plant cells. Their job is to capture sunlight and help turn it into food (energy) for the plant. Sometimes people mistake that plants need oxygen and not carbon dioxide, but the real thing is that plants release oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. Plants also produce glucose which is sugar.

The photosynthesis equation Plants don’t just magically make food they follow a special process that can be shown in a simple equation.

In words, it looks like this:

Carbon dioxide + Water + Sunlight → Glucose + Oxygen

That means:
Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil, and sunlight.
Then, inside their leaves, they make glucose (a type of sugar) and give off oxygen into the air.

In science symbols, it looks like this:

CO₂ + H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + O₂

Why its important Photosynthesis is very important because it helps plants make their own food and grow. During this process, plants also release oxygen into the air, which people and animals need to breathe. Without photosynthesis, there would be no plants, and without plants, some organisms wouldn’t be abale to survive. That means the food web would break down. Photosynthesis also helps clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide, which helps reduce pollution, because too much carbon dioxide could increase global warming. This amazing process is the reason life exists on Earth.

Food webs and food chains Plants use photosynthesis to make their own food. Because of this, plants are called producers they start the food chain.

A food chain shows how energy moves from one living thing to another. For example, a squirrel eats grass, then a fox eats the squirrel. That’s a simple food chain.

A food web is made up of many food chains connected together. In a food web, animals eat different plants and other animals, so it shows all the connections between living things in an ecosystem.

Photosynthesis is one of the most important processes on Earth. It helps plants make food, gives us oxygen to breathe, and supports all life by starting the food web. Without photosynthesis, life as we know it wouldn’t exist. So, take care of plants and trees—they work hard every day to keep the planet alive and healthy!
